Cat Facts: Scent-Marking

Cats Scent-marking their territory inside the home is generally only seen in multi-cat households when one feline challenges another cat’s claim to the territory.

Sweat and scent glands are located on the paws, and clawing releases these secretions onto the surface marked. Bunting accomplishes the same thing through the glands located on the face, and the strong-smelling pheromones in a cat’s urine is just one more way to announce his presence to other cats.
